I'm Not Ready for Kindergarten

Today I gave Evan his first "long hair" haircut. It was so nerveracking! I'd never done his hair this way, and it was much harder than I thought it was going to be. I'm happy to say that he sat still the entire time (which made it soooooo much easier!), and that it doesn't look too bad!

After his "nap" time today, I went upstairs to get him ready to go to the pool with Chris, and I asked him if he liked his haircut. He said that he'd forgotten what it looked like. When he got to the mirror, he made a shocked face for a second, then rather seriously said, "Is this good for kindergarten?" I was already struggling with how big the haircut made him look, and I almost lost it when he said this.

I thought that I could handle him going to kindergarten, but now I'm not sure! I almost started balling over a haircut!

We also went shopping for some new clothes for Chris this morning, and ended up buying Evan his new backback for kindergarten, too. He was super excited to pick it out himself. I have to interject here how much Evan is like my father (Pops). Evan had to look at and check every single backpack before making a decision. Apparently it was a major choice for him! He ended up picking a spiderman backpack that came with an attachable spiderman lunch kit. He was wearing it around the store, and Chris and I just kept swapping glances at him; he looked so big!

I used to wonder why humans were so different than animals that had young in the wild. Some animals are on their own almost right from birth; why are humans so different?  I now know that it's because parents can only handle so much at a time, and the kids must grow up slowly for the parents' sake. Too much growth at one time can paralyze a parent's heart.

Maybe by the time he graduates from college I'll be handling this better... One day at a time. :)

Pool Party

The weekend following the 4th of July, we celebrated again at Aunt Linda's pool. The kids had so much fun getting to relax and swim in the pool! Evan woke up that Friday morning saying, "Pool time!" All we pretty much did was eat, swim, and watch movies the whole weekend; it was great!

We finished off the weekend by painting my tummy like a beach ball. It's been a tradition to paint my stomach with each child. Evan was a pumpkin, Aubrie was a Santa that Chris painted so that his mouth was on my belly button and moved every time I laughed, and now Elise was a beach ball in honor of summer vacation.

July 4, 2013

We kept July 4th pretty simple around here this year. I was feeling a little strange, and wanted to take it easy, so Chris took the kiddos to the 4th of July get together in our neighborhood. It was really exciting because it was our first time doing something fun in our new neighborhood for a holiday.

After the holiday get-together, the kids came back and we cooked hamburgers for dinner (in the oven because Chris and Evan had to put our tabletop grill together before we could use it) before going out to see the fireworks show in the Woodlands. Aubrie looked so cute in her red outfit that I couldn't resist getting some pictures of her! Evan seems to be going through a "boy" phase and wasn't up for us dressing him up.

The fireworks were so much fun! The kids kept saying how cool it was. We actually got pretty good seats, too!

Getting Ready for Elise

While getting ready for Elise's arrival, I found the baby bumbo seat that we used for the other two kiddos. Of course the kids had to try it out and see if they still fit!

We were also able to go and get a 4D ultrasound done with Elise yesterday! The kids were really good, and thought it was very cool to see her face on the tv screen. I'm so glad that it worked, as we weren't able to get the 4D done with Aubrie since she was in breech position at the time.

Elise was quite the mover during the ultrasound! She's a snuggler like Evan, and just kept moving further south as we kept "messing" with her. She was making faces the entire time; smiled several times, frowned when we the ultrasound tech tried to get a picture of her feet, and kept playing with her tongue. We also saw that she was lying right along my spine on the right side, which is why I've been having trouble on that side. I mean, you can physically see her without an ultrasound to know exactly where she is sitting.

Overall, I think she's got Evan's profile and features. Every now and then I would see her do something that reminded me of Aubrie, though. Now we just get to wonder what her coloring will be. Will she have lighter hair and blue eyes like Evan since she favors him, or will she have the darker hair and brown eyes like her sister? Who knows!!!! It will be fun to see when she gets here!

I feel like we have done a good job of getting ready for her arrival so far this summer. A few things left on our list are to get the carseats all settled (we know what we're going to buy for Chris' truck, we're just waiting a bit since we don't actually need them right now), putting up the beds and changing stations throughout the house, and making a ton of freezer-foods so that the transition will be eaiser when I'm home with her. Other than that, we're getting closer to meeting our little girl!
